WHat to know about Dialysis
  • Medical Preparation: Follow your doctor’s advice on medications, lab work, and dietary restrictions.
  • Logistics: Arrive early for your appointment, wear comfortable clothing.
  • Comfort: Bring your own headphones, books, or other items to keep yourself entertained during the session.

It’s often recommended to follow advise of your assigned dietician, renal care sisters, or your doctor. Your dietary guidelines are personalized and dynamic as it is often based on your latest blood lab results.

  • Always inform your nephrologist of all medications you’re taking. Some may need adjustments or should be taken after dialysis rather than before, as dialysis can remove certain drugs from your bloodstream.
  • The procedure itself is usually not painful.

Let the dialysis staff know immediately.

  • Know Your Medications: Ensure you understand which medications to take before and after dialysis. Some medications may need adjustments.
  • Maintain Your Access Site:
    • Keep your fistula, and graft clean, avoid heavy lifting and pressure on it.
    • For Catheter, keep the catheter clean and check for signs of infection (e.g., redness, swelling, warmth, or pain).
  • Dress Comfortably: Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your dialysis site.
